Last-minute win in thriller can spur Chi on to top half finish

Chichester’s first team manager Mark Pacey hopes a last-minute 5-4 win against the University of Birmingham can spur his side on to a top-half finish this year.

Chi have struggled so far this year, sitting bottom of the men’s conference west with only one win before Saturday’s match.

But a first-half hat-trick from Ollie Baxter and two late goals from Jake Lerwill and Luke Emmett spurred Pacey’s side onto victory in a nine goal thriller.

The three points lifts Chi off the bottom and sets them up for a trip to Bristol tomorrow (Saturday, 1pm) and then a crunch derby with Fareham at home on November 27.

Speaking to the Post, Pacey said: “We hope to use [the Birmingham match] to get some momentum and build on that for the rest of the season.

“We have ten games left and we’re looking at potentially another five wins.

“We hope to finish in the top half, which would be a brilliant achievement in a tough league against some very strong university teams.”

All focus is on the league now for Chi after Sunday saw them lose to Havant on penalty strokes in the EHM Cup.

Pacey said: “It was a shame as we reached the final of that competition last year. But double headers are always tough.

“Some of the lads had played three games that weekend to make up the numbers.”

Away from the first team, things are looking good for the club – with the success of Great Britain’s women’s side at the Olympics seeing an increased level of interest.

Pacey, who also acts as the club’s director of hockey, said at club training on Monday night more than 100 youngsters are involved.
