Wine | Relishing fine wines with gusto!

Quel weekend! Friday night wine – tasting at a Gusto Wines event, courtesy of gentleman Jim Brooks, and one which I will feature next week. Saturday night – sampling the delights of the Coda Chamber Ensemble and being as transfixed as my fellow concert goers by the dulcet tones of seven fine musicians interpreting the music of legendary Pink Floyd, in classical style at the homely Chichester Inn.

What about the wine, you may well quip, well, not being able to resist a bargain, it came to my notice that Sainsbury’s have resurrected their 25 per cent off offer on six bottles or more purchased until this coming Saturday, December 3. By Jove, off I scurried and initially espied a Bollinger Special Cuvée reduced to £30, and down to £22.50 if part of six or more bottles.

If you like your Champagne full and rich with toasted fresh brioche and appreciate super-fine bubbles which fill your mouth and leave a luxuriously creamy feel, then this is the one for you – a veritable bargain and a definite no-brainer at this current mouth-watering price! If you are slightly more impecunious, then the Étienne Dumont at £14 and thus £10.50 if part of six, is light and refreshing with fine bubbles and a good buy!

Turning my attention to white wines, the Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc at an offer price of £7.50 is a refreshing wine with rich gooseberry, lime and tropical fruit flavours – a fine example of its genre. If you seek a little more refinement, then the 2015 Domaine Reverdy Ducroux Sancerre Beau Roy on offer at an enticing £10.50 is decidedly creamy and aromatic with balanced acidity and a long finish, and is well worth a punt at this offer price.

As we embrace winter climes, a hearty red beckons, thus at an offer price of £7.50 a 2007 Baron De Las Vinas Gran Reserva merits consideration given its aromas of dark fruit, peppery nature and well-oaked character and improves if allowed to breathe a while before consumption!

If you do not like a very oaked red, then the Carta Roja Gran Reserva 2009 is for you. Offering soft, smooth tannins and oozing ripe plum and vanilla flavours and at the offer price of £4.20ish, this is my bargain of the week and should be a cheap crowd-pleaser!

Next week I explore the realm of Gusto Wines and hope that your week is one of purposeful imbibing – à la prochaine!
