MEMBERS of Bognor and Arun Chess Club are currently making all the right moves in the Portsmouth Chess League – with the A team leading division one, and its B and C teams lying second in divisions two and three.
The club’s teams are run in partnership with Chichester Chess Club and hopes are high the A and B teams can repeat last season’s successes in winning their sections.
Club spokesman Mick Plumb said: “Bognor is only halfway through its chess-playing season, but club champion Rolandas Lukoshius has already won the club championship, securing the title last Friday.
“He won 12 of his 13 games, drawing the other. ”
The club, which enjoys superb playing facilities at The Bognor Club, in Sudley Road, every Friday evening, from 7pm, is on the lookout for new chess players of all abilities to help swell numbers.
Bognor operates all-year-round and runs a number of internal tournaments, including traditional-length games and ‘rapidplay’ chess and is open to players of all levels.
There are plenty of opportunities to play against other clubs and some of the members have gone on to represent Sussex regularly.
There is plenty of on-road parking and a public car park nearby and the club has a bar offering lower-cost drinks. Membership is less than £1 a week and all the equipment is provided.
