Builder chosen for new hospice

A BUILDING contractor has been appointed to enable a new hospice for Bognor Regis area patients to take shape.

Kier has been chosen as the preferred bidder for the new St Wilfrid’s Hospice at Bosham. The £15.5m hospice is due for completion late next year and will provide the facilities to meeting the growing and changing needs of 21st century care.

Trevor White, the operations director for Kier Construction Southern, said: “We’re delighted to be working with St Wilfrid’s Hospice to provide the local community with high quality care facilities.

“We will work closely with the hospice to ensure the new design meets the needs of staff, patients, families and the local community.”

The hospice will have 18 ensuite rooms, which will be more than 100sq m larger than the current rooms, with pumped oxygen available in each.

This will provide extra space for nurses to provide better care and for family and friends wishing to see their loved ones.

Improved family facilities will include a coffee shop, five lounge areas, two quiet rooms and a dedicated shower room for visitors. There will be a larger day hospice, dedicated art therapy room and access to more private meeting and treatment rooms.

Hospice chief executive Alison Moorey said: “The new hospice will give the local community high quality services and skills to deliver the very best end of life care for patients and their loved ones for the next 30 years and beyond.”

More than half the cost of the new building is being met from the hospice’s reserves. About £2m is coming from the sale of the current hospice site in Donnington and the other £6m needs to be raised in the Dreambuilding campaign.
