WORSHIPPERS held a unique service at a Pagham church to welcome a new chaplain.
The congregation at Pagham United Reformed Church were pleased to support the arrival of the Rev Dr Janet Hopewell. She has become the church’s Synod Chaplain and advocate for the elderly as well as an associate minister at the Pagham Road church.
Beryl English, one of the church’s members, said: “Janet’s new post will involve working ecumenically to support the elderly, especially those with dementia, and also supporting their families and carers. She will also have a wider training role within the Sussex and Surrey area.
“It was wonderful to see a number of local clergy from various denominations joining with us in the service.
“The mayor of Bognor Regis, Cllr Phil Woodall, was also present and he welcomed Janet on behalf of the town.”
Refreshments were served in the church hall after last week’s service to give a good start to the new venture.
Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb also met Ms Hopewell last Friday.
He said: “We discussed Janet’s plans to offer spiritual care to the elderly in the Bognor Regis area, in nursing homes and also in local churches.
“I raised with her the importance of reviving and supporting local groups such as the Pagham Association for the Elderly.”
