This festive season, Petworth House celebrates a bygone Christmas that reignites the old traditions of the Georgian era.
A Georgian Christmas invites you to step back in time to the 19th century and celebrate Christmas with the 3rd Earl of Egremont and his new wife, Elizabeth Ilive.
Visitors to Petworth House can see selected state rooms opulently dressed for a party, and decorated with lashings of garlands, kissing boughs, and mountains of mistletoe and greenery from the Petworth estate. The experience is brought to life with a personal welcome from one of the servants.
Cathy Hakes, visitor experience manager for Petworth House and Park, said: ‘”A Georgian Christmas ends a whole year of programming devoted to Elizabeth Ilive, a fascinating woman who installed a laboratory at Petworth House and experimented in science and chemistry.
With a more personal touch, this festive celebration explores how Elizabeth, as well as other family members and servants, might have celebrated the holiday in the Georgian period.”
