last year a young homeless woman, sleeping mainly in a doorway in London Road, died in temperatures approaching sub-zero.
The immediate cause of her death or how she came to sleep in the streets aren’t really relevant. But the stark fact is that she died in this freezing cold at night in central Bognor Regis.
Even with increased provision for rough sleepers when temperatures fall below zero, there are still insufficient places for the current needs of those who would not sleep out by choice. As a stopgap measure, could we ensure that anyone sleeping out on our streets has a Thermos flask?
This could then be filled with a hot drink or soup by passers-by and might help forestall some similar tragedies this winter.
