As rockets diminish in the early November sky, I move on from the winter warmers of last week to six wines available at good old Sainsbury’s to adorn your wine rack.
I begin with a 2017 La Luciana Araldica Gavi on sale for £7.50. Gavi is produced in the misty hills of Italy’s Piemonte region and the Cortese grape produces crisp, floral, peachy and aromatic wines which are best enjoyed young. This particular example oozes zesty citrus and white peach flavours and would be an ideal apéritif!
For an outlay of £8.75. the 2015 Signé Montagny, pale green gold in colour, hosts lemon and mineral notes on the palate added to a touch of flint and a hint of creaminess and is a great introduction to the elegance of white burgundies without having to overstretch your finances.
My final white selection is that of a 2016 McGuigan Founder’s Series Adelaide Hills Chardonnay currently on offer for £9. The Adelaide Hills are one of the cooler wine regions of Australia and grapes ripen in warm days in January and February, but the region generally experiences cool nights and this significant diurnal variation produces cool mean daily temperatures resulting in high quality wines.
Zingy lemon and stonefruit notes characterise this lusciously creamy and flavoursome gem!
In terms of red wines, the 2014 Marqués de Montino Rioja Reserva on offer for just six readies is a bargain-buy and oozes ripe cherries and spice and is a delightful winter tipple – spice up your life (oops – reminds me of four has- beens)!
For £ 7.50, the 2018 Argentinian Santa Julia Malbec has cherry and plum flavours to the fore with a touch of spice and is good value at this price, but my final choice takes pole position this week in the form of a 2015 DV Catena Malbec which fully justifies its twelve pounds purchase price.
Just one sip can send you into transports of delight as this delectably smooth and subtle Malbec hits your taste buds with its black fruits, black pepper spice, hints of vanilla and a decidedly long finish – a Bordeaux-style Malbec and one to savour!
Yet again Sainsbury’s fails to disappoint – à bientôt!
