Approval given for prominent site to be used to stage events

FORMAL permission has been given to enable events to be staged at a prominent Bognor Regis seafront site.

Arun District Council members agreed to its proposed change of use of the Place St Maur to allow entertainments and activities to be staged there.

The area is the location of the Christmas ice rink and hosted a marquee for the Southdowns Folk Festival last September. It was previously used for markets.

But the proposal approved by Arun’s development control committee provides a permanent approval.

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said at last Wednesday’s meeting: “I think this area is brilliant to use for entertainments. I’m very pleased the council saw fit to remove the seafront mounds to make a decent-sized place for an entertainment area.

I’ve never had any complaints as a ward councillor from the residents of Mountbatten Court.”

Daniel Vick, a council planning officer, said activities for public events on the Place St Maur would be limited to 7.30am-10pm unless agreed by Arun to limit the disturbance for residents in nearby flats, like Mountbatten Court.
