Friends’ groups get together to help those with dementia

DEMENTIA awareness around the Six Villages was raised at an information session in Walberton.

A number of Village Friends clients and volunteers attended the event by Dementia Friends and hosted by Peter and Cheryl Rolt.

The management team for the soon to open Walberton Place Care Home are helping to ensure as many people in the area as possible are informed about dementia.

Peter said: “This was a most useful and informative session and, while Village Friends does not provide a dementia care service, the event provided volunteers with a better understanding of the condition and of the challenges faced by both sufferers and their carers.”

Village Friends is a good neighbour scheme that was started more than 20 years ago to try to meet some of the needs of lonely, mainly elderly and sometimes housebound, people in the Six Villages area.

Volunteers visit them in their homes for a chat and, possibly, a cup of tea on the basis of being a good neighbour.

Meg Brackley, who chairs Village Friends, thanked everyone for attending last week’s session.
