Charlie Stemp, who shot to fame in 2016 playing the lead in Half a Sixpence, returns to Chichester Festival Theatre in Tom Stoppard’s high seas comedy Rough Crossing.
Stemp will be reunited with Half a Sixpence director Rachel Kavanaugh and the cast will include John Partridge, who won last year’s Celebrity Masterchef but, as well as being known to TV audiences as Christian Clark in EastEnders, is one of musical theatre’s leading men.
They will be joined by Issy van Randwyck (Fascinating Aïda), comedy TV favourite Matthew Cottle (who was in The Chalk Garden at CFT), Holby City’s Rob Ostlere, and Simon Dutton, who portrayed Simon Templar in The Saint.
André Previn wrote the songs and music in this absurd tale centred on two famous but desperate playwrights (Partridge and Cottle) stuck in an ocean liner headed for New York, feverishly trying to rehearse their latest show before reaching land, and opening night.
But they are constantly distracted by their delicate composer’s attempts to end it all, having overheard his lover confess her feelings to the leading man. Add an unorthodox waiter (Stemp), a mistimed lifeboat drill and a vanishing glass of brandy and these colourful characters become tangled.
