Shop set to close

A BOGNOR REGIS-based charity is to close its shop in the town after a decade of trading.

4Sight Vision Support announced this week its outlet in York Road would open for the last time on March 13.

A closing down sale began on Tuesday and will continue into the final day.

Nik Demetriades, the charity’s chief executive, said the decision had been made with reluctance but the renewal of the shop lease later this year made it the only financially sensible course of action.

“With a potential hard Brexit looming, the current seemingly continuing decline in the retail sector and a very competitive and overcrowded charity retail sector in Bognor, it has made it an almost impossible task to be profitable – especially when faced with other charity shops that have both a larger supporter base and impressive behind the scenes operational networks,” he said.

The past 12-18 months have seen staff and volunteers at the shop make an extra effort to increase sales and profits but their work has failed to produce the necessary uplift.

Sarah Brooks, the shop’s manager, said the closure should not mask the benefits the shop had created.

“Many of our customers have said to us over the years they have loved being able to support a local charity, with real services helping people with sight loss in Bognor and Arun,” she said.
