Ashes stolen from vehicle

Enquiries continue to be made by the police into the theft of a person’s ashes from a car in Nyetimber.

Officers have released CCTV images of the two suspects for the theft.

Two women were seen trying a number of door handles in the Nyetimber Crescent area in the early hours of last Sunday.

They eventually gained access to a vehicle and stole the ashes – belonging to a relative of the deceased – as well as a number of other items. The ashes were later discarded nearby.

A 27-year-old Bognor Regis woman was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of theft from the vehicle but has since been released without charge.

Superintendent Julia Pope said: “We were saddened to hear of the circumstances as told by the victim, and can only begin to understand the distress this may have caused.

“Thankfully, the ashes were recovered nearby having been discarded and have since been returned to the victim.

“We will do all we can to trace the offender and bring them to justice.”

Justin Norman, Sussex Police’s investigations and resolutions centre supervisor, said: “I am confident that someone in the local community will recognise those responsible.”
