Call for temporary vehicle bans

Arun District Council leader, Cllr Dr James Walsh has demanded that West Sussex County Council should urgently allow temporary vehicle bans to allow safe pedestrian and cycle usage during the summer, and the recovery phase of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking to the West Sussex County Council cabinet on Tuesday morning Cllr Walsh said: “We need urgent action to cope with the large and welcome increase in local cycling and walking.

“The county council must be able to fast-track such temporary schemes, and not take  six to 12 months to go through the normal cumbersome procedures.

“There are ‘oven-ready’ schemes that should be implemented in days in places such as Pier Road, Littlehampton, and High Street/Tarrant Street, Arundel, to allow free and safe pedestrian and cycle use in these areas, as a support to local business, and to ensure public safety.”
