Cheers to pub’s fundraising efforts for children’s hospice

Chef Sam Walker says he is hoping to cook up a feast of fundraising to help a children’s charity providing hospice care for youngsters with life-shortening conditions.


Sam and his colleagues at The Royal Oak in Lagness near Chichester have chosen Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice as the charity they want to back going forward after seeing how much charities in general have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.


Sarah Colbourne, head of fundraising at Chestnut Tree House said of the fundraising shortfall: “When the coronavirus crisis struck, our monthly fundraising income plummeted by 70 per cent due to events being cancelled and the closure of our shops. Although constraints are easing and we have been overwhelmed by the support from our local community, we still need help to make up the shortfall so that we can continue providing vital hospice care, now and in the future.”


Chestnut Tree House offers support for the whole family including psychological and bereavement support, end of life and short break care and sibling support. It currently costs over £4million each year and as families are never charged for their care and less than 6p in every pound is funded by the government, the charity relies heavily on the generosity, help and support of the people of West Sussex.


Sam says staff and regulars at the pub have discussed a number of fundraising ideas to boost the hospice funds.


He said: “The work they do at Chestnut Tree House is absolutely fantastic and we all agreed that it is such a deserving cause that we should try to help where we can. We’ve got a few ideas up our sleeve and have already got a collection tin. We hope we can make raise lots of money over the coming weeks and months.”


Pub manager Kay Martin says due to The Royal Oak sponsoring Bognor Regis Town FC, they are now hoping that they can arrange a charity football match at some point at the club’s Nyewood Lane ground.


She explained: “Along with a quiz night, it’s just one idea we have had and I’m sure there are many others we can come up with to help the hospice and support the tremendous care they provide.


“It’s clear the pandemic has made an impact on fundraising so there has never been a better time to try to help out.”
